A brief talk talk about the origins of comics, touching on things like:
According to experts, there are two uniquely American art forms, Jazz and comicbooks.
The Yellow Kid in McFadden's Flats which was published in 1897.
In 1933, Funnies on Parade became the first colored comic book printed in the now-standard comic book format we know today.
The first place comics were bound and colorized was here in CT
The first superhero is considered to be Popeye the Sailorman
From there, a brief talk about the heroes we all know (Superman, Batman, Captain America, Spider-Man), some of the earliest serials, TV shows and films, then about the cultural significance of superheroes, and why they are important to our own pop cultural heritage.
Another topic will be the differences between comics and movies, the author's own history and association with comics, as a reader, fan, professional in the field (journalist, creator, publisher, and historian) and why they are so important.
If time allows, there will be a chat about the current crop of comicbook films coming out this year.
