\New England’s ancient cemeteries contain far more than the remains of the first settlers and citizens of the Northeast’s colonies and the young American nation. Apart from the history that the visual and written records etched onto the stones record, there are stories found there that lend depth and context to the times, and offer lessons in history, art, and culture that resonate today. Good history is also good storytelling, and Connecticut’s old cemeteries- more than other states in the region- offer a diversity of materials and carving styles that set it apart. Visiting these venues offers a window into the past and insights into our notions of colonialism and, ultimately, nationhood.
A light lunch will be provided by the Library
